Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery

The superspeciality of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery came into existence in 1964 as a Division. and became a Department in 1998. The Department has a sanctioned strength of 4 teaching faculty. The major thrust of the department is on open heart surgery and coronary bypass surgery.
The department has awarded M.Ch. degrees to 4 candidates and Ph.D. to one. In addition. postgraduate students of the Department of General Surgery are provided superspeciality training in Cardiothoracic Surgery for a period of 2-8 months. So far
100 M.S. students have been trained in the Department. The teaching faculty is actively engaged in Health Education activities in the field of Heart Disease. Tuberculosis. Lung. cancer and hazards of tobacco and cancer esophagus. More than 27 papers have been published in the last 5 years. To add impetus to the development of open heart surgery. the department has organized 8 workshops and has recently acquired a new heart lung machine and a hypothermia machine. A large number of distinguished faculty from premier institutions have visited the Department including Prof. Valiathan.
