Department of Ophthalmology
Year of establishment: 1964
The departmental separate building was constructed
from a donation from Bhuvalka trust. MCI inspection was done in 1981 and
approved the MS Ophthalmology degree. MS Ophthalmology has been awarded
to 154 students; DOMS was awarded to 6 and PhD to 2 students. The major
research activities include amniotic membrane and limbal stem cell transplantation
in ocular surface disorders in collaboration with Department of Zoology
and role of prostaglandins in open angle glaucoma. Techniques in the department
include a scan biometry, Nd Yag laser for posterior capsulotomy and iridotomy,
automated perimeter for visual field charting. The department is providing
free eye-relief camps in Varanasi for combating blindness. In the last
5 years, 10 papers in International journals, 50 in National journals
and 3 chapters in books have been published. The Department has organized
national and state level conferences (4), Workshops (4) and Seminar on
Eye Banking.
