Department of General Surgery

Academic activity:

The academic activities of the department involve undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students teaching. The undergraduate batch usually is of 50 students per year. The postgraduate strength is 14 students per year, thus making a total batch of 42 students (junior resident-academic). The undergraduate curriculum is replete with didectic lectures, bed side clinics, clinical surgery, operative surgery and clinical pathology classes. The department is proud of an excellent collection of surgical pathology specimens, X-Rays, ultrasound, CT scan and MRI films. Teaching aids like digital multimedia and projection are regularly used. The postgraduate education and training involves seminars, journal clubs, case presentation and Clinical Society meetings every week. Once a month, each unit presents its monthly mortality audit by rotation and once every year the departmental audit is presented at the institute.

The department is proud of a well equipped air-conditioned seminar hall having facilities of digital multimedia and digital projector with a seating capacity of 60. It is used for seminars, guest lectures, UG and PG classes, and various society and conference meetings.

A CD/DVD library is in the making which will consist of CD/DVD collection of surgical procedures, seminars, clinical surgery teaching material. The Department has its own library having various recent books.

The department organizes conferences, CME, Surgery update, workshops and guest lectures round the year. The National conference of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASICON 2006) was held at BHU and organized by the Department of General Surgery under the aegis of UP Chapter of ASI and Varanasi Surgical Society in December 2006. It had witnessed the participation of esteemed faculties and surgeons from all over the country and the world and was unanimously a grand success. This year Department hosted the Annual Conference of the UP Chapter of ASI (UPASICON 2007) from 2nd - 4th November. During the conference Dr. Michael Alexander, the Chief of Surgical Services of Shouldice Hospital, Toronto, Canada was the Chief Guest. The department also organized VASCULOCON on 28th-29th July 2007. Various eminent national and international faculties have graced the department as guest speakers. The department also founded the Indian Society of Wound Management in 1996 and has been hosting the office of the Society since then for the last eleven years. It publishes Indian Journal of Wound Management, the official Journal of the Society. The faculties of the department have published various books, monograms, and training modules, and participated in consensus statements. The department has a prestigious list of publications, both in national and international journals of repute and high circulation and citation.
The Surgery Department is also actively involved in research activities, both basic and clinical, in the form of Ph.D. theses, M.S. theses, trials and projects in collaboration with other departments of the Institute and the University, and various national and international Universities. Its work is also affiliated to the Center for Experimental Medicine and Surgery, which is a common center of the Institute for basic and animal experiments and cell culture studies.
