Highlights of the Department of General Surgery

The Department of Surgery which started in 1962 has many credentials in the name of various faculty members. Various high class surgeons have glorified its name and the various awards have come to the department and its faculty members.

Prof. K.N. Udupa was awarded Padmashree. Prof. N.N. Khanna and Prof. M.P. Vaidya were awarded BC Roy award. Prof. N.N.Khanna, Prof. Saroj Gupta Prof. Anand Kumar and Prof. V.K. Shukla are the recipient of Fellowship of Academy of Medical Sciences. Prof. N.N. Khanna served as President of Indian Association of Surgical Oncology. Prof. N.N. Khanna, Prof. Anand Kumar and Prof. A.K. Khanna served as President of UP Chapter of Association of Surgeons of India. Prof. V.K. Shukla served as founder Secretary and President Indian Society of Wound Management. Prof. A.K. Khanna and Prof. Anand Kumar served as President of Varanasi Surgical Society.

Prof. A.K. Khanna has delivered several prestigious orations like Dr. S.P. Srivastava, Oration of UPASI, Dr. S.N. Mathur Oration of UPASI, Dr. Roshan Lal Gupta oration of UPASI, Dr. S.C. Misra oration of UPASI, Dr. T.P. Banerjee Symposium of UPASI and Dr. A.K. Mehrotra Oration of UPASI.

Prof. Anand Kumar has delivered several prestigious orations like Dr. S.P. Srivastava oration of UPASI, Dr. K.L. Wig Oration of NAMS, Dr. K.L. Wig oration of Advancement of Medical Education and Glaxo Oration of NAMS.

Prof. Anand Kumar, Prof. A.K. Khanna and Dr. Rahul Khanna has received young outstanding surgical teacher award of UPASI while Prof. Anand Kumar also received senior outstanding surgical teacher award of UPASI. Prof. V.K. Shukla is Governing Council Member of Association of Surgeons of India.

Prof. Saroj Gupta and Dr. Rahul Khanna have carried out Ph.D. in Surgery.

Many teachers, received various fellowships like Indo-Italian Cultural Exchange Programme to Prof. A.K. Khanna, Indo Netherland Cultural Exchange Programme to Prof. A.K. Khanna and Prof. Anand Kumar, INSA fellowship to Prof. A.K. Khanna, Boyscast Fellowship to Prof. S.K. Gupta and Dr. Rahul Khanna; EORTC Fellowship to Prof. S.K. Gupta. Prof. A.K. Khanna and Prof. Sanjeev Gupta are UICC Fellows and Prof. Sanjeev Gupta also received Commonwealth Fellowship. Dr. Mumtaz Ansari received Dr. J.L. Rohtagi Fellowship of UPASI, Dr. Puneet received Rotarian Indo US Fellowship, Travelling Fellowship of ISG and Ethicon Travelling Fellowship of ASI and Dr. Somprakas Basu received Dr. V. Mahadevan award of ICS.

Prof. Anand Kumar was invited as visiting Professor at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, Nepal and Prof. A.K. Khanna was invited as visiting Professor Narchang Institute, China. Prof. V.K. Shukla was invited as visiting Professor at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Canada.

Prof. A.K. Khanna is the Fellow of American College of Surgeons and he has also received Dr. R.M. Kasliwal Award of National Academy and he has done MBA in Hospital Administration.

Many of the teachers of department has various research grant from various National and International societies and most of the teachers have traveled across the globe and had the chance of working in various prestigious institutes.

Several teachers have received the best paper and best poster presentation award at many National and International conferences. Further many teachers are on the Editorial Board of the various National and International Journals. Many of the teachers are invited for chairing the session, panel discussion, guest lectures and live operating surgeons. Further many members are as the various expert groups of various Institutes. Various conference and workshop are conducted at the department regularly.
