TUBERCULOSIS:
The treatment of Tuberculosis, both pulmonary and extrapulmonary
is free of cost. We are providing high quality Revised National Tuberculosis
Control Programme (RNTCP) -DOTS (Directly observed therapy short-course)
services where entire course of treatment is totally free. Tubercular
patients are also provided 75% concession in train fare. Patients have
to come to the DOTS centre, chest ward of SS Hospital or Chest OPD (room
no. 106) on any working day. Three sputum examinations have to be done
(spot, overnight, and spot) for which person has to stay for one night
as on 2nd day patient has to give overnight and spot sputum. Diagnosis
of Pulmonary tuberculosis is made by 3 sputum examination and not by Chest
X-ray. If all 3 sputum specimens are negative for acid-fast bacilli (bacteria
causing tuberculosis) the patient is treated for 10 to 14 days with broad
spectrum antibiotics such as co-trimoxazole. Care is taken to prescribe
only those antibiotics which do not have anti-tubercular activity. Sputum
examination is being done free of cost. Standard quality anti-tuberculosis
drugs are provided free of cost and patient has to take medicines in front
of staff of DOTS centre (supervised therapy). This treatment is being
followed in more than 126 countries of the world.
